Otherwise you may need to find yourself a longer RS232 interface cable between the PC and vehicle adapter. Make sure the cable you purchase is "low capacitance" and does not exceed 10'. I know several people who use a desktop on a rolling cart for this purpose.
You must however adhere to certain safety issues regarding house grounding. Make certain the outlet you are using for the PC has a GFCI interrupt. Also never try and use a vehicle battery charger while the PC is hooked to the vehicle.
If you are not sure if you have GFCI protection in your garage, call a local electrician for help. It is a wise (and cheap) investment in electrocution protection.
