    New connection problem

Well I haven't used my HPT in quite a while but just today I tried it again. When I try to read the vcm in vcm flash, it will say "requesting ignition voltage" then it will come up with the message "unable to connect to vcm-make sure cable is connected and key is in run position" But if I try the same thing with the cable disconnected from the obd-II port, it never says "requesting ignition voltage", it just takes about 10 seconds longer to come up with the same error message. This tells me that it is connecting somewhat to the vcm, but obviously not entirely. What can I check/do to troubleshoot this further???
