What options should be covered? What level of detail? Embedded scantool or just tuning? locked to a few pcm's at a time? unlocked? price? proprietary cable? use dealer flash equipment ?

A group open source project thats sold for an affordable price which will reimburse those that put in the hours to come up with the device, and those that work to upgrade the software with new version changes...

not something priced to make a couple of guys able to afford 8 second race cars.
We got this guy Not Sure, ...

Linux based and free. Charge for the cable. Open source is hard to charge for since you have to post the code anyway ;D
Cables on the other hand are physical and justifiable for charging.

Make it too complex and it get too hard to use. Simple datalogging and plain english tuning would be sweet. Its nice to be able to click and drag a line on a graph for changing parameters..

and most of all.. DONT FORGET 4 CYLINDER CARS!!!! :

I not 100% sure what I would like to see, of course the ability to change A/F and spark timming, adjust the expected gear ratio, change shift pionts, change for injector size. That all seems obvious to me though, I also like the embeded scan tool. I not really sure I know what you mean by locked to a few pcm. I definatly don't mind paying for a way to have this ability If you can make worth your time by only charging for the cable great! Also I think that there should be a discount for people who are already dhp users. From what I have seen If I lived any where near you or dave I could have everything I want done resonably enough that I might not bother with a diy program but az far a way as I live from anyone who can help me out a diy sounds like my on option.
I have confidence that anything that you guys put out will be worth having and resonably priced as for making everyone happy if you do that your gods.

I would like to see the easy interface as others have mentioned.
    BUT
I also would like the ability to download the entire flash to a bin... mess with it.. and then flash it back.
It would also be nice to have it disable checksums
Scan ability is not that necessary.
Actually it would be cool to have a few levels of a tool like this.
    1) easy click and drag package
    2) EEPROM read and flash package
    3) both
    Thats all from here.
I am just worried that somthing will become available that is limited to just what was put into it. It needs to have the ability to allow the people who know what they are doing to do it (and even blow their engine if it comes to that ;D )

Ohh one more thing.. I want to beta test it. :P

I hate being locked to one PCM. If you have a spare, it really isn't a spare if you are locked.

Re: What would you like to see ....

    Magnus,

"The device" has already been designed.

My partner and I were designing an interface for our BMW diagnostic
stuff, and I got VPW into the mix. We're waiting right now for the
Delphi DLC ( formerly Motorola MC68HC58 ) to hit parts "distribution"
such that we can order them in quantity.

The interface is intelligent, has a flashable processor, which means those
so inclined can write their own "code" for our hardware to add needed modes
Will have a boot mode to allow loading of fresh proc. code on the fly
and be able to handle both ISO, and VPW 1x/4x modes with enough internal
RAM memory and flash memory to do block transfers WITHOUT
an attached PC, if you write the proper internal code to do so.

As far as "when" it will be available, I don't know yet, but will
know rather soon. The best thing is that if you don't like our API
y'all can write your own 8)

    Jim Conforti

PS: Oh, I forgot to mention, it's USB based as many laptops you
can buy nowadays simply don't have serial ports any more much
    to my consternation.

Lndshrk, that would be an interesting device! I was thinking about something like that myself for reprogramming motronic's (so for the moment ISO is enough). I am using the COM port now, but this can be unreliable combined with windows and certain PC's. Some hardware to handle the timing and USB for higher data rates would be nice.
Could you tell something more about it? What processor are you using (in case software has to be written)? What is the maximum baudrate for the ISO part (200k would be nice)?
