Locked Parameters after 5.0 upgrade beware!!!

    General
Advanced Parameters Training is released. Some advanced parameters will be locked until
you complete the training. Once you complete the course, enter the code into the software
under HELP > Parameter Access and the parameters will be unlocked.

Car stuck on the dyno now after this needed upgrade to fix a bug.

The training is free and easy. Takes about 10 minutes online. You need to upgrade to the latest 5.1.x Beta if you plan on using Virtual Torque Tables. It's bugged in 5.04 release.

I mean you can also uninstall 5.x and use an older install file to install a 4.x version and keep tuning.

    Cool

Yes, training is free & easy and requires linking your device code. However, Ouch! not while on the dyno. A forced training requirement "feature lock" is not for tuners. Probably a corporate compliance or risk mitigation strategy. More government & attorney jobs

Or just install and use them both side by side although it does take some file hiding to do this as 5.0 deletes everything and not just beta when you update. Only reason I installed both on one computer is because I was getting tired of swapping computers everytime I needed to look at a log made in 5, but due to some things missing in 5 had to keep switching back to 4 to make changes to those items.

Yup, that is how HPTuners is getting around the EPA. They are forcing the liability onto the tuner (or shop/vehicle owner)so that if someone gets caught disabling emissions systems with the software they created, they are not liable. While I think this isn't fair, it is better than the alternative where they would be forced to severely limit their software capabilities like Cobb had to do.

Yes that is exactly what I do. I run a specific version of 4.x(non beta) that has all the things I need for most cars. Then I also have 5.1.x beta that is required for some of the newer cars like the 21-22+ model year or where I need the new 10 Speed Auto calibration tables.

5.x anything needs the training from what I can tell. Again, the training is easy and quick. HPTuners put a youtube video out on how to do it. The thing to remember here is that you are allegedly legally accepting the liability for reducing any emission control effectiveness on any tunes you flash with your registered interface.

The word "fair" is highly subjective.

Is it "fair" that the company that produces the tuning software may get fined for an action taken by an individual customer ?

If a firearm is sold lawfully, and the owner kills someone with that lawfully purchased firearm, does the store that sold it, and company that manufactured it, get fined based on the individual actions of the customer ?

Likewise if an automobile is sold lawfully, and the owner kills someone with that lawfully purchased automobile, does the dealership that sold it, and company that manufactured it, get fined based on the individual actions of the customer ?

The training course and subsequent software coding is a lot more work for HPT, and there still may be potential risk (as this is uncharted waters), just so that customers have access to "historic" parameters.

I have operated a business in the automotive aftermarket for decades. I will not participate in any project that is not emissions compliant. At the outset of the project the potential customer can agree to emissions compliance, or take the project elsewhere - no exceptions.

By fair, I'm referring to the EPA's over reach. I'm not looking to debate anything here.

Fair enough - if that was your intent.

Yes, no debate necessary. The thread was to notify everyone of the training requirement before updating while on a dyno, definitely inconvenient. One suggestion was why the training requirement was "probably" added.

Regarding product use responsibility, the "user" is responsible ("liable") for how a tool is used. This is probably stated everywhere. Claiming a tool producer liability for a user misuse, is exactly what unfairly causes product cost increases, protections, limitations, restrictions, extra training requirements, or increased regulatory overreach. I like hot coffee. I will not try to ban coffee vendors or hot coffee if I spilled it on myself :-).

    Older version - locked

Even after the parameter access all the diesel emissions stuff is still locked out! Not running Diesels anytime soon. How do you get around this? Anyone have an older version?
