Yes but the controls in the computer will give misleading results...

If you enable fuel trims and they are really positive and carried over into PE at WOT the car will run really rich but that won't really indicate that the VE is off or that he's commanding too rich. It will be skewed data. Without injection timing being modified or anything I would not enable fuel trims.

ordering wideband. tried to make a hit or two today, and even with the tires spinning, i could tell tell I got way off track.
I basically made the few suggested changes, but went back to open loop for now, till I get wideband. earlier I had attempted to alter my ratio/timing/and injector timing.....
got a little ugly. back to the drawing board. Im in a good spot right now, but just wont see any extra out of the bottom till a later time.
im still hauling it to the track Saturday. I will definitely get some new logs and share them. even with the tune out of wack, i should see some improvements with the new converter. at least i will have a new starting point.

just to clarify only positive long term fuel trims will carry over into PE mode so short term trims will be fine to use. even if your trying to read plugs stft only compensates for idle and part throttle. so if you shut the car off at the end of the run, pull it to the pits and read plugs your readings will be accurate. once you figure a decent injection timing setup use stft to adjust the ve table in closed loop with only stft enabled. then you can have best of both worlds a race car that will idle all day happily yet scream down the track with consistency.

    Sounds good to me.

Old school or not, reading plugs still works. It is still a internal combustion engine under all the EFI stuff. It still responds the way a carb car did.Reading plugs has and still is an accurate way to verify what is happening in the combustion chamber. Crews from NASCAR.NHRA,etc still read plugs, no matter what the carb or EFI logs. You also need to remember that just because it looks "right" on a log, that the engine may want more or less timing/fuel.Time it for torque, jet it for horsepower. Search online for injection timing. Most of whats on here is for gen 4 engines. The link I posted above will give you an idea of what to do with inj timing. My experience with changing it are that there is a narrow window that helps with drivability, power.Too high of inj timing just makes the engine moan under load and slow down.

Rain out this weekend. Didn't get to make a pass. I did however get to make some test hits. I did add 10% to my injector timing, and it seems to have responded well. I have not bought new plugs to start reading yet. No more soot from the exhaust at idle, so It appears we're moving in the right direction.
I appreciate everyone's advice, and will definitely be taking all into consideration when making future adjustments.

update to everyone. thanks for the help
I have since installed dual wideband afr, and began some much needed fuel trim work.
having some trouble with my interface logging stand alone, but works just fine with the laptop connected.
I'm currently working with a dyno guy who should dial this thing in the rest of the way for me. once I get the bugs worked out on the
new wideband calibration. its a innovate motorsports dlg1 setup, which was easy to install, just a pain to calibrate and log.
in the meantime. I learned that my converter was crap, so PTC hooked me up with an 8" 5500 stall. love it. big improvement on my reaction time and 60'.
still haven't broke that 7 second mark, but Ive been running pig rich, being safe than sorry till I get the afr situated.
heres a link to a video on FB. not the best quality, but youll get the idea.
