Depends on the application unfortunately with multiple different pcm types by different makers ie ac delco vs bosch, E38 vs LS1, etc.
I know for GTP's you actually have to use the vin change window then the 30 second key on/off procedure(I did one on a customers car several years back) I think write vin/vats/tunerlock works well on the gen 4 pcm's.
It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...

I just change the VIN to the file, save as... a new name.
Then write entire. It has worked very good for me, it's faster than a few failed attempts with VIN/Tunerlock
If a write entire is not changing your VIN, something is wrong. It overwrites everything (including ADN and father's name of the PCM ), so it should work 100% sure.
Yeah I had tried that on a GTP I was working on and the vin didn't take, come to find out had to use the vin change window & the on/off procedure to get it to properly take. As stated it really varies from application to application.
Try entering a vin into a 97/98 Corvette, firebird, camaro, 97 grand prix, any alloytech bosch pcm'd vehicle, etc. You can't. It varies from pcm to pcm.

Guys I had a problem after changing the VIN as post 1 and i couldn't write any solution??
Like the second post states, it depends on the application.
