    Post Yank SS3600 Slipping

    hey everyone, i just got a brand new yank ss3600 converter installed in my otherwise stock 4l60E trans. Its a '98 transam making about 362hp to the wheels. stock cam. The tuning for everything has been done by Frost and its all perfect except for one thing: the torque converter tends to slip a bit under moderate throttle at highway speeds like if i want to pass someone but not totally gun it i can feel the clutch partially disengage but not totally and it never ever did this with the stock converter even with heavy throttle the lockup clutch would hold.

    So far with Frost, we changed the misfire tables to 32727, set the TCC duty to 100% max and 98% min, and eliminated lockup all together in 3rd gear. the problem is still there though and not too sure what is wrong.

    Can someone maybe explain to me in the Force Motor Current table, the horizontal axis which starts at 0 and goes up in incriments of 6 until it reaches 96. For each incriment, what would it represent in terms of throttle position? like would 12 on the horizontal axis also be close to 12% throttle or no?

    I figure maybe if i lower the numbers (increase pressure) in the low throttle situations between 0 and 30% TPS (first 5 columns???) maybe i can eliminate tcc slip but not affect transmission performance/reliability at WOT. If I can accomplish this then i can set the lockup clutch to unlock at anything more than 30% throttle but at least not be slipping anymore.

    Ive had a dakota r/t with a 3800 Viper converter and I would lock that at WOT to get better mph in the quarter mile and so that I wouldnt run out of gear (4.56's) but i guess WOT lockup is just not possible with the stock 4l60E?

    i believe WOT lockup is possible with a 4l60e. Mine is tuned to lock in 3rd gear around 110mph @ WOT

    Why not just change lit to stay locked under 1/2 throttle? I have same verter you do in my TBSS, anything under 1/2 throttle in 3rd and 4th it stays locked. At part throttle passing, no need to go over 1/2 throttle. You could even bump to 60% if you need to. That way when you nail it, you still get the benefits. You will also see about 3mpg better doing this around town. Under 50% throttle try these settings.

    1-2 shift 8mph
    2-3 shift 18mph
    3-4 shift 33mph

    Lock TCC at all settings under 50% at the same speeds 18, 33, unlock 16, 31

    Other benefits are you can baby car when cop is around and your exhaust is quieter.

    Lowering force motor current is what I had to do back
    in the day, with a TCI converter. This is before there
    was the General Pressure stuff, where you can change
    the TCC-locked line adder. Stock tune commands 0%
    way too far into the pedal and that's short of pressure
    needed for the TCC when your clutch gets smaller.

    If you look at my repository tunes, I think the force
    motor table as modified is in there.

    The Yank SS series evidently doesn't have that stout
    a clutch, occasionally see this complaint.

    What you are explaining is normal with any 3000 + stall converter. I have the same converter and used it for 6 years without any tuning at all.
    It has a great clutch, that’s not the problem. It has never shuddered during lock up and I couldn’t be more satisfied after 8 years.
    If you don’t like light throttle slippage go back to your stock converter and the crappy 60’ it gives you.

    Light throttle slippage can be fixed with pressure. The
    clutch on any 10" converter needs more pressure than
    the stock converter to get equal torque holding capacity.

    WOT locking is more a matter of construction, as far as
    whether you want to. Look to the manufacturer for that
    guidance. Just because you can, doesn't mean you
    should.

    Well, I smoked the Clutch in a Yank 3600, felt the same thing. The material from the clutch went through the tranny and roasted just about everything.

    Set the throttle down on lockup points. That way it'll disengage sooner with less throttle. Sucks for fuel economy, but it'll save your tranny.

    thanks guys for getting back to me. i know its been a few months now. i tried lowering the FMC and it helped a little bit but not much. I have it set to unlock at higher than 30% TPS so theres no more slippage and it will just unlock fully. Only problem with this though is that now I know its illegal but lets just say i wanna cruise on the highway at 110mph...... It will take me a longgggg time to get to that speed under light to moderate throttle because any more than 30% tps i basically have to go 75% to wot to accellerate because the converter is unlocked but if i am locked up, the 30% tps isnt really enough to accellerate the car at those speeds so i find the converter locking and unlocking because i am trying to accelerate as quickly as possible without going over that 30% tps range.

    what was this TCC line adder thing that you were talking about I dont rememeber seeing that....

    I changed mine to 50 vs. the factory 26.69 to solve my slipping problem with the Yank.

    for some reason i dont have that screen. under the "AUTO TCC" tab all i have is the shift lock, tcc duty cycle, and apply/release speed for normal, cruise, hot, and performance....

    Be interested in seeing how you fix yours. My 2800 stall is doing the same thing after lockup. I put a Dacco in mine so that may be my problem.

    My yank slips too, adjusted the FMC and it helped, but if you go too far, 1st gear hits too hard even at zero pressure. Wish there was an adder for when tcc is applied.
