E38's are completely tuneable in a standalone deal... I did a LS3/L92 in a 240sx not long ago that was still running the stock 2007 escalade operating system. Once I had all the junk that obviously was no longer there turned off it did fine.
I'm actually thinking about switching to an E38 myself so that I can take advantage of larger MAF tables, boost cut, faster processing, individual cylinder timing and individual cylinder fueling (not tried it yet but waiting for a test car to use as a guinee pig).
