    year/model license

    if i buy the year/model license,does the ecm have to be from that same group or just the tune i want to write to it ? in other words,if i buy a suburban license ,can i write a suburban tune to a silverado ecm that i bought ?

    Copy the differences from the suburban tune to your silverado tune, no need to license two ecm's unless you need to modify them both.
    The way the year/model licensing is setup is that it wont work between buick/chevy/gmc/pontiac even if its the same car/platform, if the brand differs you're going to have to re-license that ecm.

    i want a spare or second ecm.didn't know if it has to come from the same year/model group to use it.

    If the pcm is a silverado pcm and you don't have a license for the silverado year/model then you'd need to license the silverado pcm.
    It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...
