What would cause a P0016 after cam install?

I am tuning a C7 for another shop. This code is coming on. The think they timed it wrong.

Probably a tooth off. Chain may have jumped when they released the tensioner. It's definitely worth the time to spin around for a double check.

Could have a tooth off. Try a crank relearn if you know it revs freely. Do you know if it's a VVT cam? Possibly they installed a phaser limiter? Or installed the phaser limiter incorrect.

I would not do a case relearn until it is checked. Rev till fuel cut is asking to for trouble if the timing is off.

Obviously. I only mentioned that if it has gone that far successfully, prior to now. In which case the damage is already done or no risk when revving. However, if it has not already been revved that far, then I would definitely check the sprocket alignment.

If I recall someone had that same issue not too long ago and they reported a crank relearn was the repair. I know of the cams I've installed, I've never seen that code come up post install.

Unfortunately, I have seen a friend make this mistake. The valves will not hit at idle or low speed but the can tap the pistons on a high rev decel when the tensioner give a little. Not questioning anyone but I have seen this exact scenario play out. I as well have never seen this issue with a properly timed cam swap

Besides the DTC does the engine run OK? Idle? does it make a power curve that looks sane?

Honestly, I've had a couple doing cam swaps that set this code. 3 to be exact, and each time I had the tech tear it apart, to verify timing, and nothing. would restart and code still there, but would eventually just disappear through the tuning process. Its a little un-nerving to see it. Not saying to ignore it, but I have seen it as a phantom code

We were having this same code randomly appear until we started locking the VVT gear out completely.

You might be on to something, as all of mine were not locked. it does make sense, for it to be there then eventually learn its new fluid pressure values. hmmmmm

I did a cam swap and deleted the cam phaser and just went with a reg sprocket. I did the swap because for years I was getting a P011 code. Been to dealership numerous times never fixed. I now get that same p0016 code. What is this relearning process that is mentioned here?

Locking VVT out completely? What exactly do you mean? Is this something you are doing with tuner?

Just disable the VVT in the tune and mod the VVT table (0 out)

I wasnt talking about zeroing out the VVT tables. I was talking about locking it out with the phaser in the motor by blocking it completely as opposed to restricting it with the Comp cams block.

Oh I don't have that option anymore, factory cam and phaser are gone. Got a cam from comp cams and installed regular sprocket

OP did you ever figure out what was going on? I am dealing with a similar issue on a 2016 camaro. p0011 and p0016. He installed the cam with a comp cams phaser limiter as well.

Not a 100% sure what the isue was, I believe when the DOD kicked in 1 or 2 of the valves were either closing or opening in correctly. I got a 3 wire pig tail to connect to new timing cover and cam sensor. But that gave me a p0010 cam circuit issue. I just set the mil error not to report that. P0016 haven't solved that yet.
