What changing the VIN # actually does

Was curious to what the VIN # change actually does. I have an ECM with an 02 express van calibration on it, and was wondering if changing the VIN # changes the description on the 'Controller Details' page, like to "02 Silverado" instead? Also.......does it change anything else in the controls? The only reason i could ever see needing to change the VIN would be for security issues when communicating with a BCM. But if there are other reasons, fill me in.

The description is driven by decoding the VIN...so yes it changes that.

Also, yes, for emissions testing in some states, the VIN number in the computer needs to match the vehicle.
