Will a 6l80e work with a pcm that used to control a 6l90e?

Or is a segment swap required or is this even possible?

They both use a T43 TCM, there is no PCM or ECM able to control a 6-speed trans.
The TCM in the 6L90E is inside the transmission itself, so it should have the right operating system to make it work. You just need a compatible ECM so they can talk to each other

good - this should work out then. Thanks for the response. I have a customer who has put a ly6 into a jeep Cherokee (with the correct ECM that came with the engine). The engine tranny combo was ly6/6l90 out of a 2010 truck but the customer needed to use a 6l80 tranny because no adapter available to put the 6l90 to the jeep transfer case and there is adapter available for the 6l80 swap.

You only need to make sure the operating system in the ECM is one from a car or truck originally equipped with the trans you have.
If that is not possible, at least get a ECM from the same year of the transmission controller. This way you can flash both with a compatible OS so they can talk to each other and work good.
A mismatched ECM/TCM year-OS will give you problems like reduced engine power and other issues.

I tried to flash a 2009 truck OS (6.0/6l80) but was greeted with an error because apparently the TCM and ECM aren't communicating. Do I have to find a completely new pcm already with the correct OS, install and start over?

How did you attempt flashing it, HPtuners? You cant change the ECM/TCM OS with this software/hardware. To accomplish this you need GM tools. Find someone with GM TIS setup and give them the VIN and OS ID's from the OS you're trying to use. Dealerships will usually do this for you too, but it requires bringing the car to them.

I converted the T42 from a Malibu to run my 4L80 with HP Tuners.

Correct. Still not the best idea to mix different years if you can avoid it.

GM TIS? Is this a Tech II?

I actually have two scenarios playing out right now - I explained the Jeep scenario pretty well (or so I thought). The ecm in the jeep is the correct OS for LY6/6L90 but the transmission has been changed to a 6L80.

The other vehicle is an older chevy truck having an LY6/6l90 combo installed in it except the original 6l90 has been replaced with a different 6l90.
I have already tuned an older chevy truck with this LY6/6l90 combo last year and did not have any problems at all. Neither of these rigs that I am messing with now are working tho. I am assuming the TCU and ECU are having some sort of VIN mis-match error keeping them from functioning together correctly? I need to find someone to make the tranny VIN match the ECM VIN with a Tech II?

    Please Advise

2007-2009 T-43's will only accept OS's from those years, and the 2010-up T-43's will only take OS's from those years. If you try to program an OS outside the year range for the T-43 you have, it will come up with an error and abort programming... Been there. you will need a TCM from the same year as the ECM and use an OS for that year. Should be good then... Good luck!
