    vats won't disable

'02 camaro ss. Been reading about this for years and it all seems straight forward. I pulled the tune from the car, changed the drop down selection from PWM to NONE, saved.
    Tried write calibration only.
    Tried re-write entire.
    Tried write vin/tunerlock/vats.
    Tried relink vats.

After each try I put tape over the pellet in the key and it won't even crank over.

Put the original tune back in and it's back to normal.

What am I not doing right here? (or should I say whats left out of every how-to I've ever read about this?)

Change VATS to none. Save file
    Write calibration only, Nothing else

    Attempt to start.

If it doesn't crank the problem is the BCM and you can't tune around it, because the PCM only cuts fuel, it doesn't prevent the engine from cranking.

The BCM has the ability to disable the starter if the correct key is not used.

So it can be started with a remote start switch?

Turn the key on, put power to the starter solenoid start terminal and it'll start?

Yes, if VATS is disabled it will start.

You can also bypass the anti theft relay, it will let you crank regardless of the key.
Why do you want to disable VATS?

Much easier to disable the relay than a remote start.

Just said remote starter as an example.

I have a spare engine I'm trying to run on the stand. I was just trying to get it to work on one of my cars as a test to be sure it'll run when I get my spare engine wired up.

On the fbody disabling vats in the pcm just means that the pcm is not looking for the fuel enable signal from the bcm. To disable the bcm portion you would have to rewire the starter relay.
