Easiest way would be to have a dealer with access to a tech 2 flash you to the newest operating system which is 12614088
It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...

damn dealer wants 275.00 to do that. could i flash another file from a 12614088 E38
    and then change the vin?

that would only be 100.00 worth or credits.

You could, however the problem is finding a file that won't screw things up too bad, while your file has one os id it has multiple segment id's that you really want to match when possible. If you have some local tunershops you might consider calling around to see if any have access to a tech 2 that can do the reflash on the cheap. I'm sure there are some guys on here that might have access that could likely do it for less than the $275 you were quoted.
