Is there any benefit to running Methanol on top of E85

From my understanding, the beneifts of meth is octane and lower the intake charge temp. The same benefits are realized from E85. Since the octane ratings are virtually the same for both, the only benefit I could see would possibly be a cooler intake charge. Is that right or is there a certain point that alochol will no longer cool the intake charge? This is on a tvs2300 LS2

    Thanks

I ran 50/50 meth on top of E47 on a Turbo LNF 2.0 liter 4 banger for additional charge cooling. No gains at the wheels, couldn't run any more timing at 24psi either but I felt better. The DI needed the meth for intake valve cleaning, they coke up pretty bad on that one. (360 whp/400 wtq)

I think the charge cooling would be your benefit.

You need to look at this as two topics...

For starters running more octane then what is needed will hurt performance. High octane fuel burns slow and low octane burns fast. You should run the lowest octane possible that keeps you at the knock limit. Obviously E85 is higher then pump gas but should be enough to satisfy quite a bit of spark advance to make power...any more then that is a waste.

The cooling effect of E85 is not the same as meth so use the meth if cooling the intake charge is more of an issue. In the end all this adds up but also has an expense and pain in the ass to stay on top of.

This was an exercise we did last year with meth that was interesting...

With all due respect Howard, flame speed (burn rate) and octane are pretty well unrelated. You can have a high octane rating, combined with a fast burn rate. Although this is not the case with E85. It has a slower burn rate, which is one of the reasons you gain HP by advancing the timing. Advancing the timing allows the fuel to be burned more completely. Advancing ignition timing does not automaticially increase power, as you still want peak cyl pressure to happen at the same time, roughly 15 degrees ATDC.

However, I do agree that running more octane than required is a waste.
