Potential Tuner
Engine recommendation (want to buy with HP Tuner in mind)
Hi,
I'd like your advice on purchasing an engine with an eye towards tuning (rather than the other way around).
I have a 1985 Chevrolet c10 pickup. After a week of solid work, it has been painted a sonic blue pearl basecoat (it needs a final sand, the last coat of blue basecoat and then clear).
My plan for the truck is to retire the 350 chevy that is in it currently and install a modern truck engine. I am leaning towards the gen III or gen IV 5.3L with a 4l60e transmission (4l80e?). I'd like to port the heads, add a custom exhaust and install a cam - likely a 220/224 (or perhaps 216/220). I'd do that more for fun than making absolute power, so realistically the 5.3L should be plenty of horsepower for me. My plan is to tune the engine with HP Tuner. I'm in the process of saving for the Greg Banish DVDs, HPTuner Pro and wideband O2.
It would be great to hear some opinions on the advantages / disadvantages of the Gen III vs. Gen IV and if there is a particular engine than lends itself towards beginner tuners. I'm not going to spend $9,000 on a camaro 6.2L with 6l80e, but I do have a little flexibility.
If there is an engine / transmission / harness combo you would recommend, please let me know!
Thanks,
Phil
