engine / pcm swap - reflash

i am putting my entire engine/tran from my salvage 02 regal gs into a 99 monte carlo. i need to use a 98+ gtp os per the experts. can i simply put my regal pcm in the monte and flash it with the gtp os or do i actually need to get a physical gtp pcm and use it (and eventually unlock it)?

when does the "vin" stuff come into play? if i keep my old pcm can i flash any compatable tune on it, irregardless of the year or make?

i'm confused. don't want to have to buy a different pcm if i don't have to. sorry

You should be able to dump a stock GTP tune onto your current PCM as long as it has the capability to control the engine in question. It you have a 3800 SC engine, you may want to read up and find out if the NA PCM can run the SC engine with just a reflash.

You will have to copy and paste tables to avoid using credits to flash the donor tune as a whole. The donor tune will require credits to alter or flash as a whole file.

From a credit point of view, just went through this, you need to license every OS that you use in the process of flashing. That includes the OS you would write over (if you are doing that).

For example, took a 411 pcm from an 01 astro van and used a downloaded OS for a 01 Savanna to flash on it for use in a 98 silverado.

I decided to first transition the data from the old 98 pcm to the new downloaded os file from the 01 Savanna. In order to do that I had to apply 2 credits to edit the Savanna file, fine right? Well I then came to find out that I also needed to apply 2 credits for the 411 pcm and its OS in order to write over it.

So though the 411 pcm is the same hardware for the astro OS and the Savanna OS, hp tuners requires credits for both of them. Kind of weird because I just wrote over the pcm and that OS no longer exists.

Anyway point is that your best bet (cheapest) is find a pcm with an OS already loaded on it that you can modify to fit your needs, that way you don't have to spend extra credits to get around hp tuners licensing.
