Why is it so hard to buy an E40 at a salvage yard?!?!?!?

I'm trying to buy an E40 at a salvage yard for an engine swap...EVERY yard I call asking for a computer for an 05 GTO, or an 06 Trailblazer SS says "oh yeah we have one"...I go down...and it's a P05 PCM from a front drive car...looks just like an E40 but isn't one. Such a pain.

Anybody have a spare they would part with?

E40's were only found in a small handful of vehicles as you have found out, 2005 Corvette, 2005-06 GTO & 06-07 TB/envoy If I'm not mistaken, each of which were relatively low volume build number vehicles...ultimately they were more of a changeover pcm more than anything.
It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...

Is it possible to upgrade to a newer style?

No, E40 vehicles are 24x. Newer pcm's are all 58x.

Yeah, I know that...it just sucks that they look identical to the much more common P05.

If this is an engine conversion for a custom vehicle or older vehicle, and the engine is an LS2 (or similar 24x / 1x), many have chosen to use an LS1 style PCM (P59) to control both the engine and transmission (if an automatic).

    Just another option.
