NGK AFR Wideband vs. Fast Wideband

I REALLY like the simplicity of the NGK unit and the non ricer look compared to my Fast unit. Anyhow I saw the below today on NGK website.

"The AFX measures and displays air-fuel ratio (AFR) from 9.00 to 16.00".

My FAST unit reads to 20.0 AFR.

Anyone have issues of not knowing just how truely lean your tune is should you say be leaner than a 16.00 AFR? Basically does it matter that it only reads to 16.00 AFR?

Well, the only difference is, if the AFR is really 19:1, the AFR Error off from 14.7 would read 29% off on the FAST (19/14.7) and only 9% off on the NGK (16/14.7). So it would take longer to tune in.

The NGK is a damn nice unit! I dont have one single complaint about mine and havent had any problem at all so far.

IMO I think that the range of afr from 9.00-16.00 is plenty well enough.

One item to note: I use a 13.8 Volt DC power supply when I tune on the dyno. It makes Offset issues a thing of the past.

Anybody using anything on board to help regulate the power supply? Regulator? Conditioner? Harmonic filter? Other?

Inverter to the regulated power supply back to 13.8 VDC... Kind of stupid but it does work... LOL

To get rid of the voltage differential that makes HPT read different than the WB gauge.

And to provide a well regulated power source. Battery voltage wanders in any automobile and it will affect the wideband to some degree. When you're working with tenths of a volt it all counts.

I would also be interested in seeing everyone else is using and any advice they would give for those of us that need to man up.

I have used both widebands myself. In tuning, the FAST's ability to read that lean is unimpressive to me, because I get the feeling that as it gets leaner the FAST gets very inaccurate. I would be so bold as to say you'll have better luck with the NGK unit. Here's what I've learned about the NGK-if it's near 16.0:1, let it do the corrections. If it pegs and seems to be much leaner than 16.0:1, increase the fueling by a large number. Remember, you don't have to hit 14.7 or 12.5, you just have to get a number you can use to determine the next step.

Great idea, have you tried testing back to back with the power supply and then with your car power to see how much your offset error actually is?

    Thanks,

It typically gets it to within a tenth.

I think the real issue is isolation.

might this be why I'm seeing readings that disagree with my narrowbands? I'm weary of trusting any widebands after what I saw...
