Where to Install Wideband in Exhaust?

I recently got a AFX with NTK wideband system and was wondering where I should install the bung on it? I have LT's and ORY on a 98' Z-28.

I know most people put it on the passenger side before the Y pipe merges. I was thinking of putting it right after the merge at the Y, that way I am monitoring both banks. Would this yeild better results or lead to inaccuracies?

You will probably get different opinions on this;but, I do not see a problem with installing it after the merge providing there are no cats.

I would do it on the driver side since #7 is known to go lean.

I don't know, Id say it really doesn't matter too much. I wanted it closer to the heads simply because I wanted faster reaction. I have mine on the drivers side where the NB would go on my headers and it seems to work well. As long as it is in the exhaust system, and there are no leaks, I think you will be good. Just make sure it is ahead of cats if you have them.

Thanks for the input guys, I ended up mounting it on the drivers side of the Y pipe for ease of use. I couldn't reach the merge of the Y pipe with the car on the ground and I wanted to be able to take my WB in and out without jacking up the car. Working well so far.

i used my factory drivers side rear o2 bung because i have no cats on the car and only use the front o2's

    rears are tuned out.

i think its close enough to be pretty accurate.

I personally suggest Bank 2 on Ford or GM. That's passenger side on a GM and driver side on a Ford. If you have long tubes, at least 6" behind the collector, so you'll get a good reading from all 4 cylinders on that side.

Stock location for rear 02 sensor on passenger side on GM has always been my choice. My laptop, tools, and my a$$ are usually on that side anyhow while I have my buddy driving to make certain we are covering all the right rpm's without me having to kill myself to look at the laptop while driving.

I thought I'd give this old post a wake up! One thing that I would like to know is where do tuning shops put the wideband? somehow I think that they would have some easier Ideas for mounting a wideband, that they are going to pull off when they finish the tune?

They usually pull a front o2 out, insert wideband. Or they use a sniffer in the tailpipe.

Thanks for the reply White. Am i correct in saying that the sniffer in the tailpipe only works on catless cars?

Best place is 6-8 inches away from the collector if you have longtubes. Dont use the front O2s.

I have one in the collector and moved it back about 8" and it read the same. It depends on what type header it is and the location of the threadlet. I check both banks though to verify one side doesn't go leaner, mainly in OL areas.

Not trying to be a d***, but why can't you use one of the front o2 bungs?

    Money,
You can use a wideband through/after cats - but you will miss,(more accurately you will see it late and it may not 100% represent actual) the transient response, and the output is delayed unless reading steady state. I.E. on a dyno, accel up to say 3500rpm and hold a steady 50% load - the reading will stabilize after a few seconds as opposed to nearly immed. without any cats - O2 into the cats has to equal O2 out - the cats absorb some initially before becoming saturated and outputs the same number O2 molecules out as it takes in.
Just some info for people looking to use tailpipe sniffers on catted cars so they know the limitations and that they can use them.

I have seen that american racing headers put there wideband bung in the X-pipe, which i thought was a great idea.

You could get 2 LC-1s, a LM3(AUX Box) and then you can log 2 widebands .
