    02 TrailBlazer tuning with 4.2 I6

I decided to play with the tune on our 02 TB I6 so I added support for it the other day and just now got a chance to work with it a bit. I would love to see more involvement on here with these and what does and does not work. I dont see too many threads since the release of support for tuning these engines but it would be great to get some more input. A few things I noticed and not sure if anyone else ran into this, but after a few times of flashing the pcm the "Reduced Engine Power" light would come on the dash the instant I tried to push on the gas pedal. I thought it was something I was doing in the tune and when I would go back to stock the light wouldnt come on. The last flash I made all I did was set the TM tables to 0s and up my shift points a bit and it still did it! I dont recal the code but I will write it down next time it trips, if it pops up again but said something about Driver 5. After clearing a few times after this past flash it didnt come back on after a quick drive around the block to see how the shifts felt. On the WOT 1-2 shift the tps value drops to 38% and then goes right back to 100%. Wouldnt setting TM valves to 0s prevent this or is there more to it? I am pretty much going into this blind outside of the few threads I could find months ago about tuning these engines and again there just isnt much talk about them. I would love to gain some light throttle gas milage and some top end HP and dont see why that isnt feasable with the VVT on the exhaust side but again I am new to tuning this engine and just looking for a little advice and would probably try about anything to see/feel the effects.

i have a 2003 trailblazer engine/trans swapped into a 98 wrangler and have done some tuning on it

i learned a lot from a bin in the repository that was tuned by ls racing(or something like that

do a compare on that to your stock bin and it will get you started

over on the competitors website forum there is a p10 sect in the forum as well as a post on someone that got a substantial mileage gain by modifying the dfco tables

oh and jayinwizzy do you have a dyno slip backing up your 350hp comment or are you assuming that the (factory hp + mod1 + mod2 + mod3 ) formula works (it would be a first )

well maybe im wrong im no pro lol i bought some escort gt2 and set it up for my truck, i put in 6000lb instead of 5000lb b/c i thought they weighd 5.5k stock but its like 4.5 i think, but when i did a 1/4mil measurement the thing read 357HP at 41mph, i thought that was pretty high..., i couldnt make it to 60mph b/c i was on a semi-busy road by my house, and i didnt make 1/4mile either, but my 60ft. was 2.3, and 0-50 was 5.4. besides those numbers i have no other evidence sorry.

also i went by this and its close, so i figured the gt2 had to be pretty damn close.. 270-275HP(stock)+(TBS(8-10+HP))+k&nCAI(10HP+)+Borla Stainless Catback Dual Exhaust(30HP says GM Engineer))+stage1chip(30HP)+93octane=350ish...

same as gt2. so i go by what i see, im a total noob keep in mind lol

Probably much closer to 250 at the wheels then 350.
It doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be done in two weeks...

I had the computer flash the reduced power after I flashed it with a mod for firming up the tranny shifting.

All I did was to turned it off, waited a few few seconds, restarted it up and was good to go.

I would like to experiment more but have not had the time to dedicate to it.

I have been tuning my envoy for the past yr or so with good results. I have uploaded one "economy" tune to the respiratory but have about 4 others I use. I have only gotten the Reduced Engine Power light once since tuning. Not sure what caused it. I would like to see more on tuning the 4.2's as well. If anyone would like to see a tune I have please email me.

With a full VE tune done on the road then perfected on the dyno, I was able to get 230whp/wtq out of the 6 cylinder banger.. mods were volant intake, custom made headers with no cats (most probably lost power then gained with them), exhaust system with 275/45/20s on a rear end of 3.73s....

Not bad for basic bolt ons! I'm sure if the E-fans were out for my Trailblazer at the time, I would've gain an extra 5-10whp

I have yet to put mine on the dyno. I can feel a huge difference in some of my tunes.

    Bringing back from the dead.......

    Justin and Trailblazin-

Are you guys tuning your VE by LTFT, STFT, ???.

Looking to start on our 02 TB, and some guidance on what sensor/PID to tune VE tables by.

I had VERY good results tuning my 05 Colorado (multiple VE tables as well) by LTFT, then STFT.....wondering if I should have just done STFT the whole time. With the TB not having a MAF, to me it seems it should be the same as tuning the Collie in SD, at least in my understanding.

it should be exactly the same as tuning ur colorado..though if u have a wb02 u could really dial it in with half the time.. it's a simple VE AFR% error..

I guess what I am trying to say is, how do you tell when, which VE table the computer is using?

For instance, from idle up to 1600 rpm, is the PCM using the Main VE idle, Low RPM Dbl, Low RPM Single?

Or, should I just make 1 table, and just copy and paste the portions that apply to each VE table (0-1600, 3800-7000 RPM, etc)? Make sense?

And what is the difference between single fire and double fire?

with all this technology going in do they give u a baseline and a caution parameters to compare to or is this totally on u to figure out what u feel works, like maybe a set tune from them that they may recommend for performance and another recommended for economy!! sorry but im trying to figure which programmer to buy and am really interested in this one but not so good with this computer stuff in the first place. how does this compare to other tunes like tunetime/slp/westers garage? they set a tune and its ready to go no figuring out! just wondering outloud thanks in advance for your input.

fixing to tune my brother's 05 trailblazer 4.2 I6 never tuned a trailblazer before but i have tuned a couple of F-Bodies is there any difference in them or what do i have to watch out for in doing so. The first step's i usually take are taking off the torque management, copying the performance trim's an pasting them to to the cruise trim's and raising the speed shut off's to were they won't stall the truck anymore in high speed. any help on the trailblazer would be appreciated

I posted up a modified .cfg that I've used that has worked well for me. I didn't set the filter count, so if you wanted to filter at 5, 20, 50 hits, whatever your preference, just save it as yours. Mine filters out DFCO and PE and is based off LTFT/STFT since Mrs. Santa got me a Droid for Christmas instead of a WBO2.

I also noticed a big improvemnt by interpolating the TPS load high/low, getting the idle spark to more closely resemble the HO table, and flattening the IPW Multiplier to 1 across the board.

Have you dynoed that thing? I do not believe for a second That you are 350 whp or engine hp with a jet chip, an intake, CB, and TB spacer. You would be lucky to put down 250 whp with that setup.
