    Advanced GM Calibration Class suggestions

I know many of you have read about my "Introduction to EFI Calibration" training class. Some have even shown up. During this class, I got a fair amount of requests for something even more in-depth for the GM/HPT crowd. Since I already teach an advanced Ford training class for another company, I have started to put together the GM version.

This brings us to this thread where I ask you what topics would you want to see in a 2-day class. My plan is to cover many of the GM-specific versions of the topics in my advanced Ford class. These would include:

Review of combustion basics from Intro class
    Injector characterization
(exactly how you go from desired fuel mass to a pulsewidth)
    Steady State airflow (MAF-based calculation)
    Dynamic State airflow (Speed-density calculation)
Blending between the two airflow states
    Returnless fuel system concerns
Proper use of Power Enrichment at WOT
    Idle control strategy
    Forced induction specific concerns
    Fly-by-wire
    Emissions calibration
    Understanding the datalogger and histograms
    Setting up custom histograms
Actual Dyno tuning procedures (with a live demo)

I'm open to suggestions from the more experienced crew as to what topics are often "missed" by people or poorly understood/explained. New guys, what are you having the most trouble mastering?

I will work on time, location, and pricing after the content is set.

    Greg,

That looks great! I would also like to see transmission strategy (shift points and TCC application) if possible. I would also like to see Timing (spark adavnce) correlation, possibly DFCO. Just to add a few.

You know I will be attending.

Transient fueling seems to be a complete mystery to many as well. Normalizing data seems to be a concern of some as well. (E.g. fuel trims are negative on a cold day and positive on a warm day)

Depending on location and time, I'd definately be interested myself. Looking forward to the final details.

    Exclamation

I will go if you have it in Cleveland again. When and where do I sign up!!!

Include some of the newer LS2, LS3, LS4, LS9 as well... I know, it all works the same but each cal is different and would like more explaination on what table does what and why.

What dates are you thinking about or are you looking for suggestions?

I appreciate the enthusiasm, but I need to focus on making it useful before I decide when/where to host it. Chances are that actual demand (number of potential paying students) for this will be lighter than my current "Introduction to EFI Calibration" course, so most will have to plan on traveling to a common location to attend. My intent is to make it worth your trouble.

As EC_Tune alluded to; the dreaded bias table (IAT vs ECT) and how to effectively deal with it without 9th order complex calculus or something

    Things I'd like to see:
    PID controller tuning theory
fueling and timing strategies for transitioning from stoich->PE->BE
    idle, both new and old
chemical effects (nitrous, meth, E85...) on tune

i can provide material for tuning the parametric VE tables, and tuning the temperature estimators (no Frost, it will not happen without 9th level complex calculus )

    VERY VERY INTRESTED
Would like to see more in depth DOD tuning to get more power in v4 mode to enable it longer.

Honestly, are even most shops set up to do this properly? Ideally, it would include 8 wideband sensors and 8 EGT probes and a LOT of spare time. Even if access to these tables is possible, most people are not prepared to do this properly. For 99.9% of cases out there, this is an example where GM's modeling is probably sufficient.

    1) Done. GM uses PID loops in several places, so some general background on how they work will help you guys in multiple places.
    2) That's already a part of my "Introduction to EFI Calibration" course, but it bears repeating here, so I'll include it.
    3) Again, general idle strategy is part of the Intro class. The plan is to get more specific here with some demonstration of the exact HPT tables at work.
    4) Done. I already cover this in the Advanced Ford Training class, so adding it here was a snap.

IAT-ECT bias is part of the dynamic airflow model, so it will be discussed.

LS1 vs LS2 differences, Where to start after trading 02 for NB07(trucks)

just to add a couple, looking forward to a central east coast class.

No they aren't and most can't afford to. A Horiba setup will cost you $20+ grand for the 8 or 10 channel AFR unit itself. But knowing generally which cylinders are out of sorts, how much, and what can be done about it either mechanically or electronically could help.
