    2008 Pontiac g8

Hello all. I have a 2008 Pontiac G8 GT currently in the shop here and am not familiar with tuning. We are swapping the 6.0 that is knocking to a LS3 376/525 crate motor from GM. I just need to know if the ECM will work (PN 12619077) and what I need to do after I get the engine in. I am planning on buying the mpvi3 but not sure where to go from there. I downloaded the software but is there files i can use to flash the ECM?

I think you will find that you are better off using the original OEM ECM from your G8 (most likely an E38). The 525 HP GMPP E67 ECM has a known issue where the idle RPM is fixed and you cannot adjust any of the idle parameters. I suppose this is fine if you want a 950 RPM idle though. If you do use the factory ECM, you will of course need to update the tune on the original ECM though...

So do you want to just use the tune supplied from GM for the 525 motor, or do you want to actually learn to tune and improve upon the supplied calibration?

If you are new to tuning and want to improve upon GM's tune, then this is no small feat. You will be best to employ the services of a competent tuner, and then learn how to tune.

FYI you can re-flash the GMPP ECM with an OEM OS to allow you to change the idle parameters, but this is going to require a Tech2 and SPSMon to do that, which is going to add additional expense. So again, I say your best option is to use the existing ECM and tune it. You can also sell the GMPP ECM to put some money back in your pocket.
A standard approach will give you standard results.

    My Tuning Software:

    VVE Assistant [update for v1.5]
    MAF Assistant
    EOIT Assistant

I don't think he is talking about having the "Connect & Cruise" (or whatever GM calls it) package. I think this sounds just like installing a cammed ls3 in place of his original motor using his original ECM. But maybe not.

There was no tune supplied with the engine. I only got the engine from GM the PN is 19434642. So all i need to do is flash the existing ECM with the MPVI3 for the specs of the new engine correct?

Not going to be quite that simple. These aren't a self learning systems like the aftermarket stuff. You don't have a major change, but will still actually need to be "tuned".

Our shop does have the Tech 2 as well as the SPS but am not sure if swapping the engine from the 6.0 to the ls3 id be able to program the needed parameters into the existing ECM. IS that true or no?

I know the 2009 g8 comes stock with the ls3 but this is an 08 so im just new to programming and im trying to figure out if its as simple as loading a tune from the 09 to the 08. Sorry if thats a dumb question.

    You will need:
    VCM Suite software (free)
    MVPI ($)
    Two universal GM credits ($)
    Hire a professional tuner ($)

The Tech2 and SPSMon was if you wanted to reflash a different OS onto the GMPP ECM. I read too much into your original post, so disregard all that. Your existing ECM is just fine.

You don't have the GMPP ECM to have that option if all you got was the motor. If this is a one time only deal, just have a pro tune your existing ECM.

I don't know if the '09 file and 08 ecm is compatible, but will still likely need tuning for the different cam.

I'd definitely like it not to be a one time thing as i have plans to v8 swap my Bonneville as well so i would definitely like to learn how to tune the parameters correctly. But again this is all new to me and my shop so im trying to get all of the info i possibly can about it

Learning to really tune will be a major time investment.

just as a wild thought, see if you can get a copy of the 2010 COMMODORE stock tune, they run a 6.0 L77 or L98 , SFA difference between internals apart from DOD.

Stay with the stock tune and just edit away. This isn't a hard setup at all to get right.
