    1998 vortec connection issues

I have a 1998 vortec going into a 1982 k1500. The engine was pulled out of the 98 and put in the 82 by another mechanic, long story short it came to me. The owner wants efi and all of the 98 controls like the cruise to work. The only harness we got was the engine harness and the only controller was the engine controller. with an OBDII wired into the harness i can connect to the engine controller on vcm scanner but it shows no vin and I cant connect on vcm editor. Has anyone else done a swap like this or does anybody have any ideas on why it wont connect and show a vin? TIA

Are you sure it is a 98 and not a 96/97? How many connectors are on the PCM? 4 or 5?

5 connectors is 96/97. Those PCMs are not supported by HP Tuners for programming. Scanner will work on them with limited PIDs.

That makes perfect sense! Do you know of any tuning platforms that will tune the older engines?

Tunercat OBD2 which was sold to Jet years ago so you would have to find someone selling a used one or buy the Jet DST and hope you don't have any problems because their customer support is near zero. Both of those are just tuners that read and write and edit. They do not come with any scanning software.

Owner should really put an 0411 in it with a 2002 L31 Express van calibration or a DBC P59 with a Mexican GMT800 L31 calibration. My preference is the P59. I programmed the 1997 Express' black box with Tunercats OBD2 and never was happy with the black box. Swapped to an 0411 in 2012 or 2013 and then have since swapped to a P59. I love the way the P59 runs these engines.
