Knocking in 3rd (1:1). Logs attached.

I'm knocking in 3rd gear pretty good and of course wondering how I can get rid of it.

Car is a 2006 GTO, LS2/4L65E A4.

Mods: IAT relocate w/ Omega, Ported TB/Intake, Drop in K&N, Weld in race mufflers, Engine TM removed, Tranny TM -50%, 160 stat, 91 octane. Everything in the tune is factory except for some fan re-setting and TM removal

Log 1: Very slow rolling start to WOT, spun about half way though second gear, hooked in once the log drops to around 4,400.

Log 2: Standing start feather in to WOT. At the 1-2 shift you can see me do limp on the throttle for 3 cells to try and get it to plant second instead of spin, it worked the rest is full WOT.

Log 2 shows a ton of KR from 4,400 up in 3rd gear. This seems to be where I have my problem, the car likes to KR around the 4,400 mark in 3rd (1:1 raito) all the way up.


Any ideas? Any thing stand out in these logs that I'm missing? Anything I can do to help fix it without a wideband?

For some reason I got used to resetting the fuel trims from messing around with LTFT and STFT tuning the day prior to these runs so my fuel trims arent showing. I'll let the car do some learning, add in a burst knock PID and report back with new logs (thanks bluegoat)

It looks to me like your IATs drop off you and are going lean.
The following are listed in this format from your log file in order of the times you hit each ... RPM, IAT, mV (AFR) - 5824, 91, 890 (13.0) : 5824, 91, 872 (13.26) : 5824, 88, 842 (13.70)

I would zero out the IAT spark adder values and increase your PE. By the top of third the cyclinders are getting hot and the load is 1:1. Fuel isn't just for power, its for heat removal.

Here is my tune. Its all factory stock as far as timing and fueling, all I have touched is the Speed Limiter, Fans, Torque Management (-100% Engine, -50% Tranny), & massaged the shift points (no line pressure adjustments).


I'm wondering if this is my IAT relocate coming into play, since I never used to ping. I relocated it into the stock airbox, on the filtered side of the air, right at the out let to the intake tube. Also it has the Omega thermistor. I'm seeing the kind of IATs now that my buddies '06 C6 does down here, and he has the same ping problem up top. We are thinking it could also be due to 91 octane w/ 10% ethanol (damn hippies).


I'd hate to get rid of the IAT relocation, it seems to be giving me more realistic numbers then the stock GTO location (Goat owners can attest to the bad spot).

Maybe there is something in the tune you can spot that is helping the ping, I'll read up on the spark adders and how to properly adjust PE. Thanks!

I agree with PurplePiss about the fueling. You need to a wideband to properly tune WOT, otherwise it's impossible to determine the AFR in the areas of KR.

The tune is essentially bone stock. With the IAT and ECT this low the likely culprit is AFR (could be lean or fat?).

With an AFR of ~12.5 in this rpm range the only time I have experienced KR in the top of third (in the 1/4 mile) was when I got too aggressive with the IAT retard.

113-122 F IATs and not letting the car pull 2-3 degrees of timing.

Also, my 2 cents; put the engine side of TM back to stock. If you are interested I'll post a tune with some other changes I think you might like.

Basic (conservative) tune you may want to try. Copy changes over into your file. I have not made any changes to fueling (you need a wideband).

Also, screen shot (log) of my car in the 4400 rpm range.

Any particular reason to return engine TM?

There are a lot of threads on TM. You've got a nice car, spend some time developing a basic understanding before blindly making changes. You stated that you removed 100% of the engine TM and 50% of the tranny TM. Why?

You mean like blindly adding in the stuff from your tune?

I removed engine TM because I want the power I paid for. I dont need acceleration limiters to keep me from going into a ditch and the 4L65E can handle the -50% reduction in TM on the trans side, its not as weak as some make it out to be.

I'll do some reading and slight adjusting to the PE and see if I cant fatten it up a bit in small increments (.01), otherwise 1 plug range colder, and then I guess I'm all out of ideas and have to stick it on a dyno with a wideband.

Insulting people that are trying to help you out will not get you very far on this forum. I can assure you, the "base" tune I posted was not made by blindly making changes to anything.

I don't have a clue what your last comment means?

You tell me "spend some time developing a basic understanding before blindly making changes" and then directly tell me to copy all of your cahnges into my file.

Fail.

Everything I've done with this tuner so far I've spent plenty of reading about. This animosity started when you told me to revert the TM reduction just because. I asked why YOU would tell me that and I got the "Your a noob, search" tone out of your next post.

If your telling me to change or revert something I am going to ask why, I thought that was part of the development of the basic understanding.

I posted a tune and a log file for you to look at, told you have a nice car (so take your time before making changes) and you got mad.

Dude, you gotta relax, nobody is trying to insult you. I trying to F'n help you out. I've been tuning LS2s for over 2 years, so I'm not asking you to blindly make changes, only making some suggestions. It's entirely up to you if want to take any of the advice.

For some unknown reason we got off on the wrong foot. If you want to start over ask some questions and we'll have another go at it.
